The London Evening Standard recorded an increase of almost 43 per cent in online traffic in January, compared to the previous month, according to results released by the Audit Bureau of Circulation today.

The monthly multi-platform report also showed a rise of almost 45 per cent in average daily unique browsers for the London Evening Standard website, which saw its average daily traffic figure rise from 143,397 in December to more than 200,000 for January. Its monthly browser total rose from 3.3 million to 4.7 million.

The Independent, which has the same owners as the Standard, recorded the second highest increase in average daily browsers online, with a rise of 25 per cent, taking the figure from 970,899 to 1.2 million.

Speaking at the Digital Media Strategies conference in London yesterday (Wednesday, 20 February) managing director of the London Evening Standard, Independent, Independent on Sunday and i Andrew Mullins, said the titles have "grand ambitions in digital".

This follows news earlier this month that the Evening Standard had won London's local television licence. At the conference this week Mullins added that the "digital strategy of the Evening Standard is video".

The latest ABC results show that every national UK newspaper website included in the audit recorded an increase in both average daily browsers and total monthly browsers.

The Sun's website came second for increases in total monthly browsers, after the Evening Standard, with an increase of 24.7 per cent, taking it to a total of 30.7 million browsers in January.

Meanwhile the MailOnline saw its monthly web traffic rise to 126.7 million in January, from 114 million in December, an increase of 11.2 per cent.

The Guardian website reported a "raft of new digital records", as highlighted in this press release. The new records include a total of 77.9 million monthly browsers for January and 4.3 million average daily unique browsers, increases of 13.6 and 17.2 per cent respectively.

In the press release the Guardian also reported that in the same month it also "marked a new milestone for Guardian video content" with more than 11.3 million views of its videos across the world. The release adds that this is based on figures from analytics platform Adobe Discover for January.

"Video coverage of the Australian Open, David Bowie's new single and the BlackBerry Z10 review contributed to the new high," the release adds. "The previous record for video views in a month was 8.9 million views in November 2012".
